City of Tallahassee ITS

Client: City of Tallahassee/Florida Department of Transportation
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Size: 21 miles
Service: Transportation & Mobility

Contact Staff: James P. Sullivan, P.E.

This project was funded through a Joint Project Agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation. It included three different components:

  1. The City’s original Traffic Management Center, located downtown in City Hall, was transferred to a new Public Safety Complex that included City, County, FDOT and Emergency Management operations. The new Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) significantly expanded the City’s traffic monitoring capabilities through utilization of the SunGuide software system. The new RTMC includes a bank of forty-two 48” video monitors, fully integrated, with twelve operator work stations, ten offices and a conference room.
  2. A Telecommunications Infrastructure (TI) backbone was installed along I-10 and US 90 from western Gadsden County to the new RTMC on Weems Road. This 96 fiber trunk line expands the City’s current Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) by incorporating the interstate system.
  3. A Telecommunications Infrastructure (TI) network, including twenty-six cameras (CCTV), fifty vehicle detection devices (MVDS), eight Dynamic Messaging Signs (DMS), eight license plate readers (LPR) and one pavement moisture sensor (RWIS) was connected to the TI backbone and linked to the RTMC for monitoring by the City.
