Close the Gaps

In the mid-1980s the State of Florida created new linear parks called greenways. These long and narrow corridors of land usually follow abandoned railroad rights-of-way, or along drainage canals, historic roads or electric/gas transmission lines. Since the creation of the first linear parks almost three decades ago, dozens of these greenway trails have surfaced across the Sunshine State—from the Florida Keys to the Panhandle.

For Phase One of this project, Genesis assisted the Florida Greenways and Trails Foundation (FGTF) to market  an opportunity to link a series of existing non-continuous trails into a connected greenway loop through our State’s heartland. By CLOSING THE GAPS, Florida is poised to connect numerous smaller communities with the major cities of Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville. The trail will create many new small business opportunities along the way and will establish a scenic, safe bicycle and pedestrian experience in the "Heart of Florida."

Following the Heart of Florida Loop, the Coast to Coast Connector came into focus. The 250-mile corridor begins on the West Coast in St. Petersburg and traverses the state to the Space Coast through Titusville. When first identified, it was realized that almost 75% of the trail was already complete. Since then, Regional Trail Connectors have been identified across the state of Florida.
