9th Street Bridge on Gandy Boulevard

This past week was the beginning of the steel placement for the 9th Street Bridge on the $83 million design-build Gandy Boulevard construction project. Installation began with the integral steel cap and girder placement will follow.  This work will be accomplished around-the-clock over the next 5 weekends.

Since January 2014, Genesis and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7 have teamed up to transform Gandy Boulevard from I-275 to east of 4th Street N. in Pinellas County into an elevated roadway with interchanges and frontage roads.

The new roadway features are designed to improve traffic flow along one of the busiest roads and key evacuation routes for Pinellas County. New features and improvements include:

  • A six-lane roadway (three in each direction) from I-275 to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N.
  • A four-lane roadway (two in each direction) between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N. to east 4th Street N.
  • Overpasses at 4th Street N., Roosevelt Boulevard, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street N. and 94th Avenue
  • A frontage road system parallel to the main roadway
  • Pedestrian features and bicycle lanes
  • Median changes
  • Traffic signals
  • Street lighting
  • Intelligent transportation system features
  • Landscaping
  • Utility adjustments

Project completion is scheduled for early summer 2017.
